Why is there a different criteria for marking IELTS academic and general reading?

by Ankur
(Pune, India)

Hello,

Can any one tell me please that why there is a different criteria for marking academic and general reading. Eg Score of 30 out of 40 would give you 7 band in academic reading but the same will be considered as 6 band in general reading.

Is it because the academic reading is harder than general reading so marking criteria is lenient for it.

Please help me to understand this as i am sitting in general test. I am practicing with academic reading and every time i ended up with 30 out of 40 which is giving me frustration that will i be able to perform well or not.

Please
Please
Please help me

Thanks in advance

General and Academic Reading Marking
by: IELTS buddy

Hi Ankur,

Yes, that would be the reason.

The academic test is more difficult than the general one.

So someone scoring 30 in GT would be a band 6 level, but if a student got 30 in the more difficult Academic test they would be a band 7.

If you are getting 30 out of 40 in the academic test then you should do better than that in GT.

I always start from last section. You can try practising at home and check how much u are scoring .

If you are getting 37 then you can do the same in the real exam .

4.5 to 7.5 in IELTS Reading
by: IELTS buddy

Hi Saiful,

You are talking about a very very big improvement in reading - from 4.5 to 7.5.

To be honest I wouldn't worry about 'IELTS' as such at the moment. You just want to improve your reading skills in any way you can.

Attending English lessons with a tutor would obviously be useful, but if you cannot do that, just use any resources that you can find on the internet that assist with reading.

Try to make reading enjoyable as well rather than just focusing on passing a test. Find some English fiction books that you like and read them as well as magazine articles etc. This will improve your general reading and help with your vocabulary if you check out any words you don't understand. Keep a journal of all the new words you learn.

For IELTS resources, you can check out all the IELTS Reading materials on this site, and the IELTS Reading Tips.

But to move up from 4.5 to 7.5 you could be talking about a couple of years of learning. You are learning a new language and wanting to become a good/very good user, and that takes time if you are currently very weak.

Good luck

I keep getting a lower score in the reading section

by Benjamin

Hi,

I took three times IELTS General. In all tests, I got grade 7.5 or above in all skills except reading part which I don't get more than 5.5. I don't know exactly what is the problem? It is in a way that even I find 10 minutes extra time on reading.

Any suggestion or recommendation?
Should I change the center?
Or do you think ex result relation to next one?

Thanks

Problems with IELTS General Training Reading
by: IELTS buddy

That seems to be a problem to me if you are doing badly but then have 10 minutes to spare at the end.

You must be rushing it too much, so take longer to do the reading - double check your answers too.

I know at the moment there is nothing on the site for general training reading, but all I can suggest is that you search online for some sample tests and practice with them.

Changing the centre will make no difference as it is the same test at each centre.

IELTS Reading Matching Question

by Hae Jin
(Vancouver, BC, Canada )

Hello everyone,

I am currently practicing for my IELTS General Training using the British Council's Road to IELTS Test Practice questions.

I have a question from the Set 1 Test Practice (Reading), Section 2: Question 26 and 27.

It is a matching question. The passage is quoted below:

"Sometimes a dismissal is not considered to have taken place fairly. One of these types is wrongful dismissal and involves a breach of contract by the employer. This could involve dismissing an employee without notice or without following proper disciplinary and dismissal procedures. Another type, unfair dismissal, is when an employee is sacked without good cause."

And the questions are as follow:

26. An employer gets rid of an employee without keeping to conditions in the contract.

27. The reason for an employee’s dismissal is not considered good enough.

Based on the answer key, Q26 is matched with D (wrongful dismissal) and Q27 is matched with C (unfair dismissal) and I answered the other way around.

Am I understanding the passage wrong or is this a mistake in the answer key?

IELTS Reading Matching Question
by: IELTS buddy

The answer key looks correct to me.

This is clearly 'without keeping to conditions in the contract':

26. An employer gets rid of an employee without keeping to conditions in the contract.

And 'an employee is sacked without good cause.' is clearly:

27. The reason for an employee’s dismissal is not considered good enough.

So yes, you must be reading something wrong.
