IELTS for immigration
by: IELTS buddy

Hi,

I am not sure which countries specifically use IELTS as an acceptance for immigration. You would need to search online and check each country.

I know countries such as Australia, Cananda, New Zealand and of course England use IELTS to assess English capability for immigration.

The score may also differ for a different country and indeed it may differ depending on what kind of job you are going to do.

So really you would need to check the immigration rules for the country you want to go to to find out for sure their rules.

Studying abroad with 5.5
by: IELTS buddy

Hi,

You need to check with the individual college and specific course for their requirements as they set their own score. Some may accept 5.5.

I'm not sure what you mean about extra administration costs. You should not have to pay more just because you have a 5.5. They will either accept you with that or not.

Some universities will accept 5.5 but you have to go the country and do an English preparation course first. But again you would need to check with the college / university.

It's the universities that decide which score they want. So you'd need to decide which ones you wanted to go to then check their requirements.

Hi,

Yes it will be valid. It doesn't make any difference where you take it.

It is a standardised international test so you can use the certificate you get anywhere.

Should I prepare for IELTS?

by Monika

Hi,

I am applying for a postgraduate in the uk and I was asked to provide a ielts academic certificate 6.5 or above.

I did my undergraduate studies in the uk, though a while back, and I live abroad but work in an international organisation and use English on a daily basis. I was not planning on taking a preparation course, just prepare for the oral a bit.

Do you think it will be enough?

Preparing for Academic IELTS
by: IELTS buddy

You may not need to do a paid preparation course (I can't say that for sure as I don't know your level of English) but you certainly should do some reading about the test from some online sources and do some practice tests.

Even for those good at English, the test can catch them out as there are certain unexpected things (particularly in writing) that can bring your score down. Also doing the reading test and writing in the one hour time can be difficult, so you should practice these under timed conditions.

IELTS in the USA

by aryanpawar

IELTS Score Requirements of Top 5 Universities in US

IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is recognized globally and is known for checking the English language skills of the candidates who aim to pursue their higher education or work abroad. Managed by British Council, IELTS Australia, IDP and University of Cambridge ESOL, this exam’s results are accepted by more than 6000 educational institutions and professional associations worldwide in over 135 countries.

According to a survey in the year 2012-13, in United States more than 800,000 students from 200+ countries enrolled for studies. IELTS is accepted by more than 3,300 US academic institutions as a reliable test for English language.

The IELTS body has not set any fixed eligibility criteria or qualification for appearing for the exam. The age limit is 16+ years; this exam is itself an eligibility criterion for candidates aspiring to migrate to English speaking countries for academic or professional reasons.

Nearly all US universities and B-schools ask for proof of English language proficiency if the candidate’s first language is other than English. IELTS along with TOEFL is recognized and widely accepted English language test in US.

Based on a survey it was found that only a few handful of B-schools do not accept IELTS score in US that includes Columbia Business School, Wharton School and Stern School of Business. These B-schools do not recognize IELTS score as a proof of English Language proficiency. Score requirement of North America universities and Europe universities are somewhat similar.

Although B-schools have set minimum cut-offs band score for IELTS, they also ask the candidates to score uniformly in all sections of this exam. For example, an MBA college IELTS score requirement maybe 7, individual section cut-off scored is 6, the overall cut-off comes to 7.5, and then the individual section cut-off would be 7.

Some requirements of IELTS score by US universities are as follows:
- The English language proficiency test by the applicants and their IELTS score have to be given by international applicants and all other candidates whose native language is other than English.

- Every individual department may require different IELTS score. Hence the candidates who want to apply to top universities in US should check with the degree program requirements of the specific department and their cut-offs.

- Nearly all US universities need IELTS score of 7 band scale in speaking module for the purpose of Teaching Assistantships.

- IELTS may be required to measure the English proficiency, but it would not have any effect on the admission decision of the universities. This decision is based on other factors like GRE score, SOP, letters of recommendation and marks at the undergraduate level.

- IELTS score is substitute for TOEFL to test English proficiency of students. As stated above, nearly all top US universities accept IELTS scores to give admission to different degree programs.

Some of the top universities in US and their IELTS score requirements are as follows:

1. University of California Berkeley- 7
2. University of Illinois – Urbana Champaign – 7
3. Carnegie Mellon University- 7
4. Stanford University- 7
5. Massachusetts Institute of Technology- 6.5

Hi,

It won't make any difference whether you take IELTS in Bali or Perth.

The test is standardised which means you are assessed in the same way wherever you take it.

Hi,

If your course is in English and you are not a native English speaker then you will need some kind of proof to show you can successfully undertake the course.

It could be IELTS or toefl, or possibly another test.

It is up to the university (and possibly immigration too) to decide the acceptance criteria so you should contact the university direct to check.

Thanks

Hi,

TOEFL is often used in the USA rather than IELTS, but IELTS is still used sometimes.

You need to ask the university if they accept IELTS or not.

IELTS band 6 and university
by: IELTS buddy

Hi,

This is entirely up to each university and their entrance requirements. They decide what band score they want for each course.

The better the university, the higher the score will be required.

Certainly a band 6 is ok to get into a lot of universities to do a undergraduate degree, but you need to check with the university that you want to apply to.

Thanks

Problem with change of citizenship?

by Laura

Hello! I have a question.

When I was completing the application form for IELTS I stated in the "ID document number" column number of the passport of the country of which I am not a citizen anymore (I changed my citizenship).

First I've passed IELTS and a few months later I've changed the citizenship. Now I want to apply to the European university, which requires my passport (and I will give the passport of my new citizenship) can there be any problems with my identity? What shall I do?

Passport change
by: IELTS buddy

Hi Laura,

Sorry but I really don't know the answer to that. I would guess it would not be a problem as long as you can prove it is your IELTS score.

I think you would be best to contact the centre that you took the test to check.

Which universities can I go to and which countries with a 7.5?

Which university / country with a 7.5
by: IELTS buddy

Hi Abhi,

That is quite a good score so it puts you in a good position to apply for university places.

However, the scores vary according to which courses you are applying to and the prestige of the university, so it will vary too greatly to really answer your question.

For example, at one university, the band required to train to be a Doctor may be very different to studying history. And a PhD will be very different to applying to an undergraduate degree.

So you really need to decide where you would like to go and what course, and then check the requirements of that university.

Good luck

Can I get into post graduation or PHD programs in computer science and engineering in any university of Australia with a 5.5?

by Anonymous

My IELTS overall score is 6.5 but writing score is 5.5.

Now am I eligible to apply for post graduation or PHD program in computer science and engineering in any university of Australia, specially in Victoria?

May I get any list of the universities with their entry requirements?

And are the universities very rigid about the rule of no band less than 6 which they normally mention in the universities websites?

Australian University Entrance Requirements
by: IELTS buddy

Hi,

Post-graduate programs usually require more than a 5.5, at least they do for a good university, though you may find some that accept it.

You would really need to decide which university you would like to go to and contact them and ask.

I'm not aware that there is any comprehensive list of band score requirements for all courses and universities.

If they have a rule on their website that you have to get a 6, it is very unlikely they would allow you in with a lower score. Some universities do have preparation programs you can do with a lower score prior to commencing the course.

Can i study abroad with a 6 band score?

Band 6
by: IELTS buddy

Every university department chooses which band score they think is suitable for particular courses, and they will all differ, depending on what level of English they think will be needed to complete it.

So you need to decide which university and course you want to apply to and check with them.

A lot of undergraduate (and some postgraduate) courses do accept people with a band 6 though.
