IELTS Letter - Moving to Study

by Nadeem
(Cochin, Kerala, India)

You are going to another country to study. You would like to do a part-time job while you are studying, so you want to ask a friend who lives there for some help.

Write a letter to your friend. In your letter:

- give details of your study plans
- explain why you want to get a part-time job
- suggest how your friend could help you find a job

Dear John,

How are you?. Hope this letter finds you in good health. I have a good news! I am coming to United Kingdom to do my Master’s in Supply Chain Management. I know you will be equally excited as I am, its been long since we last met, I have lot of things to tell you.

Coming to the reason behind this letter, I will be doing my Masters in University of Salford, Manchester, the city you are staying. It will be a 1 year course with 3 classes per week and as per my student visa, I can also work part time for 20 hours per week. As you are living there for more than 5 years now, I am well aware you will be having a lot of contacts there, who can help me to secure a part time job. I also remember you telling me, you worked in KFC as a team member for over a year, so you must be having some friends still working there, who can assist me in fetching a job.

Nevertheless, I am looking forward to meet in you in person.

Sincerely,

Nadeem

Your letter is overall well written, but some of the bullet points aren't explained properly.

My take on this essay

Dear Alex,

How are you? I hope this letter finds you in good health. I know it’s been a while since we last met but i have some amazing news to share. I’ll be coming to the UK on 2nd of January to pursue my Master’s in English Literature. I know you’ll be as excited as I am since we’ll finally be able to meet after such a long time!

Although there’s a lot to talk about, I’ll keep that for the time when we finally catch up in person. For now, I just want to share why I'm writing to you. As I’ve mentioned, I’ll be joining the MA English Program offered by the University of Wolverhampton, City Campus in Birmingham, UK, which is where you currently reside. My postgraduate degree program is a 1 year course, consisting of 3 classes per week. As per the student visa rules and regulations, I will be allowed to work for 20 hours a week, and with my class schedule, this will be pretty manageable for me.

While I have already paid my tuition fee in full and deposited an accommodation advance of 3 months, I do believe working a part-time job would help me cover my living and day-to-day expenses. You’ve already been through this when you applied for your bachelor’s program 5 years ago, so I’m sure you understand how costs can sneak up into one’s budget. I also believe having a part-time job would keep me busy since I only have 3 classes per week, which leaves me plenty of time to explore other things, and I want to use my time productively.

As you’ve been living in Birmingham for almost 5 years now, I’m well-aware of the contacts you have there. Obviously, who can forget your incredible networking skills, right? I also vividly remember that you worked at a McDonald’s as a team member throughout your third year so I’m sure you must have friends currently working there, and maybe you could put in a good word for me with them? I’d be grateful for this favor!

Nevertheless, I am excited to meet you after such a long time. Catch up with you soon!

With lots of love,
Lucy
