Hi Sam,

If you miss your IELTS speaking test then there is nothing you can do.

You will need to book another one (the whole test) and pay again unfortunately.

This is some information from an IELTS centre but I'm sure it will be the same everywhere. As you see if you are late (or not attending will be the same obviously) you lose your fee.

Proof of a medical emergency is the only way to get a refund.

What if I’m late for the test or can’t make it due to an emergency?

On the day of your test, registration is at 9am. Unfortunately, candidates who arrive late for registration will not be allowed to take the test and will lose their test fee.

If you cannot attend the test because of a medical emergency, you must provide us with a medical certificate (a letter from a GP, Hospital or a walk-in clinic) within five days of the missed test. The letter must clearly state the reason why you were unable to attend the IELTS test and must be appropriately dated.

Actually I have taken dates for ielts of 19th may 2016 from idp mumbai.

I checked my mail a day before my academics on 12th at that time and I didn't have any mail regarding my speaking exam test and I got busy with my academic exam held on 13th may.

I wasn't aware that I have my speaking test at 14th of may and today when I opened my id I saw mail regarding speaking test dates. Is there any way to reschedule my speaking test dates from IDP.

You mean that you missed your speaking test?

If you missed it then you have to sit and pay for the whole test again unless there were extenuating circumstances such as as serious illness and you can prove it.

If you have not sat it yet and you want to change you had better contact IDP to discuss it with them but you can't usually sit different parts of the test at different tests. They all have to be taken together.

Hello

I have booked 27th Aug as my IELTS exam date, which is tomorrow. I was preparing all my documents for tomorrow's test and while checking I realized that my speaking test was on 25th Aug and it's already been done.

How is that possible? If I booked my date as 27th. How can they schedule the Speaking test on an earlier date. I wasn't available on that day to take the test as it is.

In this case, can I get my speaking test rescheduled?

Some centres do have tests on Thursdays and Fridays. I'm not sure why you would have been given Thursday 25th if you specifically asked for Saturday 27th, but you should always check your correspondence about the test very carefully.

I would contact your test centre to find out what happened as only they will know.

I think for certain medical things you may be able to reschedule but it would have to be serious and you'd obviously need to provide the supporting evidence.

I would check with the centre that you booked the test.

No if you miss it that is it. Call your centre to discuss it but I don't think there is anything you can do if it is your fault.

I don't know the exact procedures of where you are but they must have notified you somehow to let you know the date? Letter or email.

Hi,

To both of you who posted above (missing the speaking in one case and missing the other modules in the other), parts of the test can't be taken on different dates.

It has to be all part of the same test so you will have to take the whole test again and pay for it if you miss any modules.

For certain serious medical conditions that may have left you hospitalised you may be able to take the test again, but you would need proof of what happened and you'd need to then discuss that with the IELTS Centre.

Due to natural Calamity and there was no power for 3 days to contact test center, also I cant able to travel to a particular city and wasn't able to attend IELTS Speaking Test. If there was some kind of natural disaster then it's possible it could be rescheduled, but I'm sure it would really depend on if you can prove it and how serious it was.

I'd discuss it with the centre where you booked the test.

If you missed your IELTS Speaking Test unfortunately you will have to take the whole test again.

You can't take different modules across different dates and then combine them.

You need to speak to your centre and discuss it with them. It is their decision, but I assume they will say no (you could still attend and you will be given a score but you will get band 0 for your speaking).

Hi,

I want to know how soon do I find out about the speaking test date?

Is it possible to register tomorrow, for a week later test, and get a speaking test right after the registration on the same day i.e. tomorrow?

It's pretty absurd that the speaking test date cannot be rescheduled, or cannot be planned.

I don't think they can normally get you a test date that quick, but you should ask them to find out the earliest they can fit you in.

Unfortunately if you miss your speaking test you have to take the whole test again unless there are special circumstances, such as admission to hospital for an emergency and you have medical proof of this.

My speaking test was scheduled on 5th of may 2017 and written test on 6th.

I had to renew my passport during the same week as its validity was getting over in 6 months (i had to apply for a visa). As the passport was under the renewal process. It had a cancelled seal on it and i also carried an acknowledgement (from ppt issuing authority) stating that i have applied for a new passport and it was on it way.

I was allowed to take the speaking test on 5th may, but i was not allowed on the 6th. I had same old passport on both days. What should i do?

Maybe you should not have been able to take the test but they noticed on the 6th but no on the 5th.

But either way you should have had an explanation of why they let you take one module (speaking) but not the other (writing).

You really need to contact the test centre where you took the test to discuss it with them and find out why.

I don't really understand what you mean.

You are saying that you have a speaking test booked for the 30th but they have not given you dates for the other modules?

Usually the speaking test is either the same day as the other modules or a bit later.

It maybe in some cases the speaking test is done before the other modules.

You really need to contact your test centre to discuss it as every centre is different so it's not possible for anyone apart from them to answer your question.

You really need to contact the centre to discuss it if you can't find your result. It is normally not available for a few weeks after the test.

If you missed the speaking you should still get a score as far as I am aware but of course you are going to get zero for your speaking as you didn't do it. That will bring your overall score down considerably.

Thank you so much, even I was thinking the same, but when I try to see my result online, it's not displaying.

And, when I contacted the English learning institute, their answer was, as you didn't appear for the speaking test, that may be the reason that your result is not displaying.

This is so confusing because if someone gave the other parts such as listening and writing then those result must be displayed online and also the result needs to be posted online.

Maybe that is why it is not displaying - they don't post it if you did not sit one module.

But you said that they said it 'may' be the reason it is not showing. Really they should know 100% if that is the reason, and it if is the reason, they should be able to tell you if you will still be sent a certificate with the others scores on.

You really need to get back to your centre and insist they check their policy and provide you with the correct information.

Maybe it is the case that if you miss the speaking they don't give you any scores. I'd be surprised though but it is your centre who will know for sure what the procedure is.

You were late for your IELTS Speaking Test. That will have been the reason. You have to arrive on time, and actually you should be there well before your test.

I was scheduled to sit in for Ielts speaking today, I got to the venue by 13:28before my actual test time but due to no clear sign in the venue, and google map showed I was lost in a different location, it was raining heavily, taxi men didn't want to stop and speak with me because I am a foreigner, the security men at the location told me they don't know what I was talking about when I tried to ask about the venue I was left wondering around till it was 13:50 which was my test time it was then that I saw two people who directed me to the venue and I tried explaining to them, but I was told I can't write because I was 2 min late. I am having some trauma and now I caught cold in the process. What should I do?

Unfortunately there will be nothing you can do. The only excuse for missing the IELTS speaking test is if you were admitted to hospital and you have a doctors note to confirm it.

You can try contacting your centre to discuss it but I don't think they will be able to help you.

I scheduled my exam for the 8th of July because that is the only time i would be chanced/available to take the test.

On preparing for my test tomorrow which is the 8th of July, i found out that the speaking test was set for the 1st of July which means i missed it.

Now my confusion is, why would they set the date for the speaking test before the day the candidate would be available. its really unfair because they had different dates for the test and i specifically chose the 8th cause that is the only time i would be available only to find out that the date for the speaking test was set a week earlier than the date i requested.

For issues like that you really need to contact your centre where you booked that test. Only they can look into it and see why you had a test booked for a date you said you could not make it.

Though if they sent you confirmation of the date by email or letter before the test then it's difficult for you to argue you did not know.

It may not be if you gave a specific date when you wanted to do the test and you told them when you were available.

But only the test centre where you booked the test can make a decision about changing it so you should contact them.

If you didn't transfer the answers then you will get 0 because your answer sheet will be blank. There is nothing you can do about that.

So you'd get 0 band for reading, but your others modules will get a band if you attend.

You may as well attend the speaking test because it will be good for practice anyway.

Phone the centre where you took the test and ask them about it. As far as I'm aware you should be able to get the scores from the modules you took.

Hi Sir/ Madam,

Please be informed that I was unable to appear for IELTS test because the bus through which I was travelling from Pune to Hyderabad got broke down at 3:00 am in the midnight and the arrival time for the same was 6:00am, driver didn't find any alternate till 5:00 am.

At last he made me to board another bus of different company whose arrival time was 10:30am, but it was already late for 1 hour. However, the bus which I board on approval of the bus driver reached at 1:30pm in the afternoon to main city of Hyderabad and I reached the exam hall at 1:50pm which was quite late and listening module was already done during that moment so I requested the invigilator to allow me to appear in the exam, but he couldn't because of British council policy.

However, he suggested to write a mail to British council stating about my problem to them and they will assist me. Kindly let me know if British council can help me in postponement of my IELTS date to some other test date and center because it's not my fault that I didn't appear for exam but due to broke down of the bus.

As the invigilator told you, you have to contact the British Council where you took the test to talk to them about it.

But the only valid reason usually for missing a test is a provable medical emergency, not travel problems.

Yes they notify you and they will have notified you already. So there must be a reason you have missed that notification.

Will i get a separate mail for speaking schedule?

Because i have only got a mail regarding LRW i checked twice and it says to check your status 7 days prior to the exam but yet it is showing blank in my speaking schedule and also today is holiday so i'm not able to contact idp or local test center pls help as i'm not able to concentrate as less than 7 days remaining for exam. i hope that it is not yet scheduled.

When you write in your test, remember to use commas! ;)

Don't panic. It will have been organised. Just ring them when the office opens.

Just now I got a confirmation that my speaking test is on October 3 while my listing & writing is on 5th.....
Please what shall I do now?

I doubt there is anything you can do. I'm not sure why you booked your test for the 5th then booked a flight home for the day before.

It seems this is your error. Call them as they may be able to cancel the whole thing and give you another date, but of course you've wasted your flight.

I applied for ielts for 30th September this year and my last test which is the speaking test was meant to be seven days after the first three tests on 30th of this month.

I just checked my mail for address and found out I already missed the speaking test on 27th. How can this be when I applied for 30th and got a test on 27th? I made everything ready for 30th and even a week after for the last test.

What can be done? I need help and I hope I get a reply sooner.

I don't fully understand what you are saying about how you booked the test.

But anyway you need to phone them. If it's their fault they will need to book you another test.

But if it's your fault there is nothing you can do unfortunately.

The only way you will be able to take it again for free was if it was some kind of emergency and you were admitted to hospital. And you must be able to prove it. You must also submit your proof within 5 days of the test.

I Have booked my test for the 11 Nov 2017 as per my availability. While i have given the speaking test date as 8 Nov 2017. While for the duration of 8 Nov 2017 i was at my hometown due to some serious medical issue, i am good to give any part of document to prove the concern. is this possible the speaking test could be reschedule.

If you had a serious medical issue that meant it was impossible to take the test and you can prove it with a letter from a hospital then you may be able to reschedule.

But discuss it with your centre as ultimately the final decision is up to them.

Hi there... Actually I booked my IELTS exam on 25th of November and I get a mail of my acknowledgement 1 week before in that I got my centre where I have to attend my IELTS but on 25th when I arrived to the centre and then only I realized I shld attend my speaking test by 23rd itself.

Only with a medical note to say it was impossible for you to take the exam. It would have to be something serious that you were for example hospitalised for.

I missed my written section on 16th December. I was attacked by hoodlums on my way to test center, they got me beaten and dislocated my wrists. I lodge a complain at police station and they gave me a police report and also I went to hospital for d treatment of my wrists dislocation and the doctor also gave me doctor report. Please advise me on what to do next?

You need to give the police report and medical note to the centre where you booked the test as soon as possible and they will make a decision.

Actually i filled my exam recently.

I got the mail from idp about exam confirmation but did not recevie it on my contact number i filled. Me and my friend we both filled it together and she got the text that time. It filled it on 3 march.
Now i'm very much disturbed why the hell i didn't receive it.

Is it important to receive text msg while you receive a mail?

Any reason that they can be late for send text?

What should i do for this? Bcz of this i am getting really disturbed...🙇

Traffic jams are not an excuse for missing the IELTS speaking test, or any other parts.

You would have to pay for a new test.

The only way you can get refunded or given a new test is if there is a serious medical issue, you are hospitalised and you have a medical note to prove it.

The only way you can resit the test is if you were involved in a medical emergency which you can prove, not a relative. And missing it because of an email problem will not be an excuse if they can show they sent it to you.

So in both cases you are likely to have to resit and pay for a whole test again if you want a speaking score included in your results.

You'd need to get the email of the centre where you were planning to take the test.

You would need a letter from the hospital to prove there was an emergency and you were admitted to hospital so you could not take the test.

No you can't re-schedule the IELTS speaking test.

When they are saying it can be up to a week after the test they are just telling you that it may not be on the same day as your other modules, not that you can choose.

But anyway, if there are issues you should phone the centre where you have booked the test and talk to them.

I got a msg from idp today that u get your speaking schedule at LRW venue but before the msg what I have seen is that speaking schedule is missed as it's on today at 2.20 on 8th Nov but got the msg at 7.36 about my exam that is 10th Nov 2018.

I don't really understand what you are saying about those messages as it's a bit confusing.

But as it has been said in the thread, if you miss the speaking test you cannot retake it unless it was because of an emergency and you had to go to hospital (and you can prove it).

If you think it was their fault then you need to contact them and discuss it.

You need to contact your test centre to discuss it, but no, it is unlikely you can retake it if it was your error.

The only way you can re-sit the test is if there has been a medical emergency leading to hospital admission, and you need to prove it.

I had my speaking test scheduled for today but when I arrived there, I was informed by the registration team that in place of my passport number, I had put the file number on my application form. I admit that it was a honest mistake. However it is not entirely my fault too, since the website accepted the file number and showed me no error uptill the test date. If I would have known my mistake in advance, I would have rectified it. But now I have to request for postponing my exam and wait for the senior management to give approval. I don't understand this

Hi can you please advise what to do.

I applied for May 10 speaking exam and May 11 LRW. I completed the application May 7, 2019 1 am. I got an email May 7 @ around 3pm and the subject says Speaking Final Registration May 11 so i assumed it was May 11.

Same day I lost my wallet containing my PRC ID which is needed in Exam. Today I’ve read the email thoroughly and found out that my speaking exam is scheduled May 8, 2019. My address is 9 to 10 hours drive to the testing center.

Can you please advise if I can ask my testing center if I can reschedule my speaking exam since i just got my Duplicate PRC license last may 8, 2018.

I don't really understand why if you applied to have the test on the 10th you were given a test on the 8th.

Also it's quite unusual to apply for a test the day before. Normally people book there test at least a few weeks before as the centre need to arrange it all. I'm not sure how they managed to take your application on the 7th then give you a test the next day on the 8th.

You really need to contact the centre where you applied and discuss the situation with them and find out if they made an error.

If the error was your fault then there is nothing you can do.

Unfortunately there is probably nothing you can do. As you say your time was given to you on the ticket so you should have attended then.

As I've said before on here, the only excuse is a proven medical emergency.

The speaking test isn't always on the same day as the other modules. I assume when you booked your other modules they mentioned that the speaking could be a different date? If not they really should have mentioned it.

If the speaking test is only being held on that day you won't be able to reschedule it because you have to take the same speaking test as for the other modules. You can't, for example, take a speaking test a week later which is connected to the next IELTS test.

There won't be anything you can do I doubt because as you say you were informed already in the email that you checked about when the speaking date was.

The writing, reading, and listening tests will all be the same day (Saturdays mostly, but some Thursdays) but the speaking is sometimes on a different day because they can't fit them all in on the day of the test.

You'd really need to get hold of your centre as the decision would be up to them. If there are tests going on in the afternoon then it's possible they may be able to shift things round. For sure though you can't do the speaking on a separate IELTS test date.

Hi Team,

Considering there were no slots available in Hyderabad, I have registered for the computer-based IELTS exam in Delhi, and the listening, Reading, and Writing exam are scheduled for 1st Nov'21.

My flight is scheduled for 31st Oct'21 (morning) and will
arrive in Delhi on 31st Oct'21 at 12:45 PM IST for my IELTS Exam.

I have been following up with the IELTS team via mail for getting a speaking slot post my arrival at Delhi since 26th Sep'21.

I was informed on 27th Oct'21 about my speaking test details, which is scheduled for 29th Oct'21 which is one day before my scheduled arrival in Delhi.

I have been requesting the IELTS team to reschedule my Speaking test, as per the examiner's availability, either on 31st Oct'21 or 1 st Nov'21 or 2nd Nov'21 considering I am arriving in Delhi on 31st Oct'21 at 12:45 PM (IST).

Additionally, I've been calling the customer care number (1-800-102-4544), however, no one has helped me yet. The only response I get is "please wait for a response mail from the IELTS Team".

Now, I am helpless! I am not financially sound to cancel my flight, which is scheduled for 31st Oct'21, and advance it to 29th Oct'21.

Please suggest what can I do now?

Buddy I miss my IETS test by being late with 30 mins , I immediately call British council centre, they advice to book another date but not less than 3 months.

Immediately they send me a transfer form to fill the date and paying the fee of of 1 226, email it back to them. Then you'll get given another date to write again.

after the lrw exam, they told me to come back in 1-2 hours, i live in jeddah so once i finished those 2 hours i find that my id is lost and couldnt attempt the speaking test. even though theyve seen my id and seen it.

Previously, i requested a transfer date for situations not similar to this. I was wondering if they can reschedule my speaking test as i had lost my id within those 2 hours.

My A1 test was scheduled for 11th August, 2023 and the time was at 11:55am I got to the centre to do my test I was not allow inside to do my test A1 speaking and listening because I did not bring the right I'd with me. The id card I bought with me was my Ghana I'd card which has the same details as my passport. So I told them should I go and bring my passport so that I can do the A1 test and they said that they will not allow me. What should I do?

Hi there, i booked my IELTS academic on 27 December(reading, writing, and listening) and 28 December(speaking). My 27th test got completed without any issue as i was there on time and fulfilled all criterion. But i got late for my speaking test as it was on 3 pm and i reached on 4 30 pm. I got late because i stuck with a necessary departmental meeting at my job site. I also contacted the helpline and the operator forwarded my case for reschedule.

What are the chances I'll get a reschedule? I'll be grateful for your valuable information.

I have an important question, my friend said he took the listening, reading and writing tests but skipped the speaking test because he had urgent business to attend to.

I thought that means his ielts results would have been cancelled, but he told me that he received a 7.5 overall, how is this possible? he skipped the speaking test yet they still marked him based on the other 3?

Could it be that he lied about getting the result?

Hi Con,

I'm not sure if you can still get a score if you choose not to take the speaking test. It may be the case that they still give you an overall score with the modules that you did take i.e. the average.

However, what that person told you regarding their score cannot be correct. It would still have to be an average of the four scores.

So say for example they got the top score of 9 in the reading, listening and writing, they would get 0 for their speaking. So the average of that would be 7 (6.75 rounded up).

And it's quite difficult to get three nines if he's not a native speaker anyway, so that average is likely to be lower. So I don't think he has told the truth.

There is no refund for missing the IELTS speaking test. Medical emergencies with hospitalisation and proof of that are the only way.

You will have to pay for and sit the whole test again unfortunately.

At the moment when I registered to IELTS, I chose 11th Sept as a speaking test date. But now, one day before my expected speaking test, website shows up that Speaking test was on 7th of Sept. Test center didn’t warn me about that. And now it appears that I can’t refund or reschedule my test.
What can I do with this problem?
And at least, can I pass other three sections of IELTS on a planned date?

Hey, I missed my speaking test date as a result of not getting the mail. It was meant to be in the 13th of may but I received a text message on the 12th of may that I should check my mail for my speaking test day and I replied to the text message that I could not find any mail but they reverted and said they do not work on public holiday which was Eid Mubarak. So I got a mail on the 14th that my speaking test date was on the 13th which I missed, can theh reschedule or refund me ?

I registered for ielts exam online, and I wasn’t aware that i would need a pcr on the test day , I wasn’t allowed to take my speaking test, I explained to the supervisor that I didn’t get a message concerning getting a pcr test , fortunately for me he was nice enough to tell me to take the test the next day with my other skills test but i should get my pcr test done . So i immediately booked a pcr home service for 12hours Covid test . Sadly for me the results was sent very late to my email and I couldn’t take the exam . What can I do @ielts buddy

You can try and argue your case to them but if they have proof they let you know about needing a PCR and you didn't do it then they'll probably not help you. You'll have to take the whole test again in order to get all your scores.

Hi Sai,

Unfortunately you may be too late. You have to do it 5 weeks before the test. See the info from the IELTS website below (IDP will follow the same rules as British Council).

Basically you would have to postpone the whole test as you cannot take the speaking at a different session to the other parts of the test.

Contact your center though to be sure.

What if I need to postpone or cancel my application?

If you postpone or cancel your application more than 5 weeks before the test date, you will receive a refund minus an administration charge. If you postpone or cancel within 5 weeks of the test date, you will be charged the full fee unless you have a medical reason. If you provide a medical certificate within 5 days of the test date, you will receive a refund minus the local administrative cost.

There is probably nothing you can do. You can't combine a speaking test and LRW from different tests.

Unfortunately you will probably have to book and pay for a whole test again.

But call the centre to discuss it with them.

It seems odd that they would put you in the position where you would have so little time, or did you book at different centres? If so, they would not know.

You really need to talk to the centre you booked at to see if in your case that is possible.

You need to contact the place where you have the test booked. They may be able to accept alternative ID. Not everybody uses a passport for ID.

I went through a complicated health condition, I had to visit 4 doctors for different reasons, and I could not move the day of the exam.

I had a breathing problem and I moved to a medical office to get oxygen, I have medical certificates for work stoppages and prescriptions + and medications, since I have strong aneamia + lack of vitamin D + respiratory problem + ovarian cyst!

What should I do?

I send you the details of my medical records of the last 3 months + the inability to move on the day of the exam since I had a breathing problem.

I received my notification on a Friday afternoon indicating that my speaking was taking place the following Monday. That's such short notice as my venue is 4,000KM away.

Regarding IELTS tests, both test centres at local level and the head office at Delhi keep pointing at each other to take help from other side. But the truth is they are not interestrd in understanding basic difficulties and concerns people are facing. They schedule the speaking test without any discussion and expect the people to attend on short notice. They do not even give an ear and try to make small adjustments to accomodate the requests. Have not seen any such arrogant indian agency or company before.

Actually My L R W exam date on 26th November 19 but for speaking test its shows 21/22 November 2019 but i am outside India and come on 24th November 2019.

So its possible to change my speaking test date or refund?

Hello,

I had booked 27th Dec as my IELTS exam date which is tomorrow. I was preparing all my documents for tomorrow's test and while checking I realized that my speaking test was today 26th Dec and it is already been done.

How is this possible? If I had booked my date as 27th. How can they schedule the speaking test on an earlier date? I wasn't available today to take the test as it is.

In this case, can I give my speaking test tomorrow that is 27th Dec?

It's doubtful you could do that unless there is a speaking test on the 27th and they happen to have a space. However, given they booked you onto the 26th I assume there is no speaking test on the 27th (or no space). Really they should have told you verbally that the test was earlier (if you booked it at their office) or made it clearer if you got the information online, but either way it looks like you did have the information in your pack so it's difficult for you to argue it was their fault.

Hi,

I booked my ielts test on 9 Jan, 2020 for a date of 17 Jan, 2020. Today 15 Jan,2020 at around 3:00 I found out that my test is on 4:20. The test center is 2 hrs away and I realized I could not reach there.

Why would they change the IELTS speaking test date and pick a slot other than my booked slot. I mean what was the point of booking the test if they picked a different date for my speaking test.

The same was not even mentioned while filling the form neither after registration. The sent me a mail which was not even marked "important" just a day before yesterday. Anyways, I tried to reach out the ielts idp and my booking centre customer care before the exam started but no one picked up the call. Neither my query was resolved after sending alot of mails.

I believe that this is unfair and should be clearly mentioned either before filling the form or after registration. What do you think can be done now.

Sorry, I only just saw your post. I know your test date has passed now.

It does sound a bit unfair, if indeed you were not given some kind of warning about this in person or in correspondence.

I'm not sure what you can do but perhaps you can put in a written complaint, to either the test centre or IELTS in Cambridge.

Basically, I booked my IELTS exam on 29th November for 6th December. They confirmed my seat amd on the next day that is Wednesday, they sent me the date for my speaking test on 5th December at 10:30.

The thing is my semester exams are going on and one important paper is on 5th December from 9:30 onwards. There's no way I can attend the speaking test which is why I mailed them immediately with evidence of my datesheet, requesting them to change the date for speaking slot. It has been 24 hours and they have not yet responded. I again mailed them today before their closing time.

Now tomorrow is the weekend and I have to prepare for my exam as well. This is really unfair. I have opted for CBT and on the website they had mentioned that for CBT speaking test will be taken on the same day.

I'm trying my best to inform them beforehand but they are not responding. What should I do?

There's nothing you can do unfortunately if you miss the test. You'll have to rebook. Only proven medical emergencies will be accepted as a good reason missing an IELTS test.
