How long is IELTS valid?

How long is IELTS valid once you have your certificate? We'll make sure you know here.

Officially, your IELTS certificate is valid for 2 years.

The exact date is according to your IELTS test report form (ITRF), which is your certificate which sets out your exact score that you were given,

So if for example the date on your ITRF is 10th February 2023, then your IELTS is valid until 9th February 2025.

Why is it two years?

A time limit is placed on the validity of your IELTS score simply because it is possible that your English ability could get worse if you have not been using it or practising it for several years.

Can the 2 year period vary?

The IELTS validity date is according to the official IELTS organisation. So it is up to the institution that is requiring the score whether they would accept a longer validity period.

For example, as of July 2018, for the Australian General Skilled Migration (GSM) validity is up to 3 years.

So you should check with the immigration centre, university, employer or other institution that you are applying to to double check how long your IELTS is valid according to them.

If your certificate is over two years old but you have, for instance, been living and working in an English speaking country and it is evident that your English is still the same or better, it's possible it could be accepted.
