The requirements vary depending on the reasons you wish to move there. These are some of the main visas, reasons for moving, and IELTS requirements.

Visa Types & Band Scores

Skills Migrant Category Visa - Band 6.5

This visa is for those that have a specific skill that is required in New Zealand. For this visa you need at least overall IELTS band 6.5 in either Academic or General Training.

This is a visa based on points. Points are gained for various categories, not just language, such as age and work experience. 

Business Category - Band 3 to 5

This visa is for those moving in connection with a private business. There are three types, each requiring different IELTS scores:

  • Employee of a Relocating Business Category: Overall band score of at least 5
  • Entrepreneur Residence or Entrepreneur Work Visa categories: Overall band score of at least 4
  • Investor (Investor 2 Category): Overall band score of at least 3

Residence from Work - Band 5

This visa is for those who have been working in New Zealand for 2 years on a Talent visa (Work to Residence Visa). There are not language requirements to get the talent visa but you need at least band 5 to convert this to a residence status visa.

Partners and Dependents over 16 - Band 4

It may be possible to bring family over, though they may need to get at least a band 4 in two of the IELTS modules. Again you should check with immigration to find out your options. 

Study - No Fixed Band

The band score you need if you wish to go to New Zealand to study will depend on the university and course you are applying to, so you should check what the institution requires. 

There are other types of visa and you may not need an IELTS score if you meet other criteria or take another test, so you should check the Official New Zealand Immigration Website to assess your options and the various criteria.
